Ocoee Middle School hosts Empty Bowl Project

By web | February 5, 2009

It goes without saying that an artist has to employ the utmost creativity to produce works of art. Ocoee Middle School art teacher Amanda Duncan had utilized her students creativity to help The Caring Place.

On Jan. 22, the OMS art club, art I and art II classes presented a check for $860 to The Caring Place. The art students made 68 ceramic soup bowls in class and then held a soup night where they charged $20 per family to attend. Families kept the handmade, colorful bowls after the event and all the money raised was donated to The Caring Place.

“I got the idea from the Empty Bowl Project, which is an international effort to fight hunger. We implemented it on a local level by giving to The Caring Place,” said Duncan. Duncan said her students were responsible for every aspect of the fund-raising event, from making the bowls and helping serve soup to making posters and decorations for the night.

Cooke’s Food Stores

Cooke's Food Store

Cooke's Food Store

Cooke’s Food Stores have partnered with The Caring Place since 2006. Their initial involvement was utilizing their employees to assemble bags of food for purchase. Customers are encouraged to buy these bags of non-perishable food items for $5 and then place them in The Caring Place’s barrel in the store’s front lobby. Cooke’s next level of involvement was allowing their Operations Manager, Tom Harris, to become a member of The Caring Place’s Board of Directors. Harris takes his role seriously and has proven to be an incredible asset to The Caring Place.  Cooke’s recently increased their involvement by donating a total of eight pallets of food from their stores on Keith Street, Springplace and Georgetown Roads.

Growing, Grace, and Groceries

By Admin | August 14, 2008

Growth

The summer of 2008 has set new growth records at The Caring Place.  We had the busiest month since the opening 6 years ago.  In July, 1022 households received food with 940 households receiving clothing.  During this same time period our regional food bank (a primary source of food) was experiencing a record shortage.  Yet, we did not run out of food.  Donations have come in steadily as the number of consumers has grown.

Groceries

In July and August, Bi-Lo chose The Caring Place to benefit from the two Cleveland stores annual hunger drive.  Hundreds of people purchased $5 bags of groceries.   Volunteers from The Caring Place manned tables to encourage donations on three different Saturdays.  Thank you Bi-Lo, the caring people of Cleveland, and our wonderful volunteers.

Grace

“Now may our Lord Jesus Christ himself and God our Father, who loved us and by his grace gave us eternal comfort and a wonderful hope, comfort you and strengthen you in every good thing you do and say.” 2 Thessolonians 2:16-17
